Introduction: Economic plant house
Many exotic agricultural commodities have become part of our everyday lives. We’re
used to finding bananas in every supermarket, not to mention pineapples and other
tropical fruit. Cane sugar, cocoa, and chocolate are all affordable luxuries. We
eat cashew nuts, spice our food with pepper, vanilla, and nutmeg, and wear clothes
made of cotton.
Most of us are only familiar with the parts of these plants we actually use, or even
just the product they provide after processing. You might never know what the whole
plant looks like unless you travel to a tropical country – or have a look around our
warm economic plant house.
You will find here an informative selection of both well-known and less-familiar useful
plants from various parts of the globe. You’ll see fruits and spices, plants used to
make fabric or dyes, and even some that give us perfumes and medications.
The plants on display vary from season to season, and also depending on how they are
cultivated. Some of them, like cotton, rice, or sesame, have to be resown every year.
The trees in the central and side beds can be seen year-round.
